Verified Methane Reductions: Leveraging Measurement-Based Methane Inventories to Quantify Reductions Trends and Prove Methane Intensities
Primary Research Organization: Carleton University, Energy & Emissions Research Lab (EERL)
Start Date: July 2023
Anticipated End Date: December 2024
Project Summary and Scope of Work
This project will provide unprecedented insight into the major sources driving methane emissions, recent reductions and trends, and up to date methane emission intensities. The intended scale of the ongoing aerial measurement campaign will produce data from a sample of more than one-quarter of all operating upstream oil and gas facilities across three provinces. Results are expected to help define more efficient and informed regulatory strategies moving forward, which is especially important considering new federal commitments for 75% reductions in oil and gas sector methane emissions. In anticipation of new provincial and federal regulatory actions to meet this target, it is vital that industry and regulators have the best possible information to drive cost-effective mitigation and evidence-based decisions. This project will help provide these data.
