Blast from the Past: AUPRF Research Supporting Smarter Water Management in Alberta

October 21, 2026

At PTAC, we’re proud to look back on research investments that continue to support innovation and informed decision-making across Alberta’s energy sector. One such project, funded through the Alberta Upstream Petroleum Research Fund (AUPRF), is the Integrated Assessment of Water Resources for Unconventional Oil and Gas Plays in West-Central Alberta Study. Published in 2014, the research remains relevant today, with AUPRF contributors continuing to access the reports as a valuable reference.

As development of major resource plays such as the Montney, Duvernay, and Cardium accelerated, industry needed a clearer understanding of regional water availability and demand. This AUPRF-supported study delivered exactly that, providing a comprehensive assessment of water allocation and usage across West-Central Alberta and helping stakeholders better understand current and future water needs.

The findings indicated that surface water resources in most areas were sufficient to support municipal, agricultural, industrial, and energy-sector needs. The research provided valuable data that helped industry, regulators, and policymakers identify potential pressure points, improve water planning, and make more informed development decisions. While water demand for hydraulic fracturing was increasing, most watersheds remained well below levels associated with significant allocation pressure.

By reducing uncertainty and improving understanding of regional water resources, this project supported more responsible development and stronger long-term water management across Alberta. More than a decade later, its continued use demonstrates the lasting value of collaborative research and accessible technical knowledge.

The project is a strong example of AUPRF’s collaborative research model in action: bringing together all stakeholders to deliver practical, science-based solutions that strengthen environmental performance, support competitiveness, and address challenges facing Alberta’s energy sector.
