Finalization of Research and Preliminary Selenium Soil Quality Guideline Derivation.

Primary Research Organization: Equilibrium Environmental Inc

Start Date: August 2021

Anticipated End Date: December 2024

Project Summary and Scope of Work

Selenium is relevant to the oil and gas industry as a potential co-contaminate with salinity and hydrocarbon impacts. Elevated selenium concentrations are also known to occur in disposed drilling waste. Furthermore, selenium is frequently encountered at above guideline concentrations in background areas, complicating the decision-making process regarding materials targeted for landfill and disposal. Development of an updated ecocontact selenium soil guideline would benefit industry in terms of reduced remediation costs as well as improved environmental performance, such as through decreased greenhouse gas emissions (by decreased remediation volumes).
