Matrix Solutions Inc. developed a Process Guide for Approaching Salt-Impacted Sites for the Petroleum Technology Alliance Canada, describing the accepted process for approaching, managing, and assessing salinity-impacted sites for the upstream petroleum industry. Guidance illustrating the principal steps is provided for proponents managing salt contamination based on key regulatory documents. The process provides a logical stepwise path for efficient evaluation of the risk of adverse effect posed by salinity contamination. If concentrations meet the relevant guidelines, no further evaluation is required. A summary of the review findings is presented for a number of sites with historical salt contamination issues, which were evaluated to test the process.
